Growing up on the Essex-Suffolk border, I spent my childhood in Constable country. I have been drawing ever since I can remember and painting in oils since the age of 18. Painting had always been in the family as my grandfather, Charles Debenham is a well known artist in the Colchester area. I continued to paint throughout my History degree at the University of Warwick and then during my career in advertising. After a thoroughly enjoyable decade working in the capital, I made the decision to train as a professional artist.
From 2013 to 2015 I studied at Charles H. Cecil Studios in Florence, Italy. Training was based on drawing and painting from life, using the centuries-old sight-size technique. I spent a great deal of time at the National Gallery, National Portrait Gallery and Kenwood House and as such I am never short of inspiration, but most admire Dutch Golden Age and British 18th Century painting.
